New federal policies, including the Energy Independence and Security Act of 2007, help reduce the nation's reliance on petroleum by encouraging expanded renewable fuel production, increasing the fuel economy of vehicles, and conducting research on advanced vehicles and fuel infrastructure.
There is a broad range of technologies available today to help reduce our energy use for transportation, and more are entering the market every year. Reducing our reliance on petroleum and decreasing the environmental impacts of our transportation system will require a mix of alternative fuels and advanced vehicle technologies. NREL works to increase the use of available technologies through DOE programs that focus on federal fleets and state and fuel provider fleets. We also support the Clean Cities program, which comprises public/private coalitions based in 90 U.S. communities that work to promote sustainable transportation.
