Research and Development
NREL's Advanced Petroleum Based Fuels (APBF) activity focuses on improving advanced technology and compression ignition (CI) engine efficiency and meeting emissions standards. The activity works to develop new advanced fuels, emission control technologies, and lubricants.
Our APBF research focuses on improving diesel emissions control devices through the collaborative Diesel Emission Control Project (DEC). APBF-DEC and its predecessor, the Diesel Emission Control Sulfur Effects project, represent joint government/industry efforts to identify fuel properties and systems that will improve engine efficiency and reduce emissions.
NREL also works to test and develop low-sulfur advanced fuels and blending components that will improve the performance of engines and emission control devices.
