Kestrel GPUs and Eagle End of Service

June 11, 2024

HPC Users,

The NREL HPC team has two important pieces of news to share with the our HPC user community.

Kestrel GPU Nodes Will Be Available Soon

The much-anticipated Kestrel GPU nodes are coming soon – we are in the final stages of our acceptance testing and expect to start getting these nodes released to early testers in the next couple of weeks. All users can expect general availability of these nodes shortly after. Thank you for your patience as this is a very new node architecture with some of the first H100's available. The GPU nodes are fully integrated into the switch fabric and storage environment, stay tuned for more details on making use of this new capability.

Decommission Date Set for Eagle - June 15, 2024

As a reminder, the Eagle maintenance support contract will end on April 30, 2024. Beyond April 30th, Eagle will remain in service but the number of nodes available may reduce and failed components will likely not be replaced if we don't have remaining spares. The Eagle operating system also will no longer be supported after June of 2024.

Therefore, we will be decommissioning Eagle on June 15, 2024. An effort will be made to maintain access to Eagle storage until September 30, 2024. All users should transition their workflows to Kestrel BEFORE June 15, 2024.

If you need help transitioning your work to Kestrel, please reach out to hpc-help@nrel.gov.
