US-ASEAN Solutions Hub
NREL provides technical assistance on behalf of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Solutions Hub, which supports ASEAN countries in achieving their national energy, economic, and environmental goals.
The ASEAN Solutions Hub is a U.S. Department of State- and U.S. Department of Energy-sponsored initiative focused on supporting advanced and innovative energy and transportation solutions, resilient infrastructure, grid modernization, and sustainable agriculture, forestry, air quality, and land management. NREL is providing technical assistance through this U.S. government initiative to help ASEAN countries enhance energy security and resilience and develop low-emission deployment of reliable, versatile, energy sources and modernized energy infrastructure and resilience strategies.
This work includes developing energy and land-use frameworks and measures that mobilize public and private finance to support strengthening energy security. The initiative also collaborates with ASEAN regional partners and global networks to share best practices to advance regional energy strategies and implementation pathways.
Application Information
Governmental entities from eligible ASEAN countries can apply for technical assistance to support energy security, including but not limited to grid modernization and planning; sustainable, resource-efficient transportation long-term strategies and related economic development and resilience strategies; and sustainable agriculture, forestry, air quality, and land management.
Eligible countries include:
- Brunei
- Cambodia
- Indonesia
- Lao People's Democratic Republic
- Malaysia
- Philippines
- Thailand
- Timor Leste (ASEAN Observer)
- Vietnam.
Technical support is available from September 2024 to September 2027. Applicants can request support using this simplified form. Applicants can also provide supplemental details about proposed projects via email. Technical support requests will be evaluated on a rolling basis based on expected impacts and practical factors such as the scale of funding requested, availability of project funding, and the time sensitivity of the request. The ASEAN Solutions Hub expects funding for each project to range from approximately $50,000 to $300,000 depending on the technical support requested. NREL can work with applicants to refine project components, including but not limited to proposed activities, timelines, and budgets.
Potential projects could include:
- Modeling support for sectoral planning and long-term strategies implementation/pathway development, including capacity building for advanced modeling in the sustainable energy, transport, and industrial sectors
- Technical advisory services to support innovative power and transport sector solutions, including renewable, diversified energy integration, grid modernization, and mobility technologies deployment
- Technical support for projects to enhance/develop sustainable agriculture, forestry, air quality, and/or land management
- Preparedness planning and implementation support to enhance resilience and disaster recovery capabilities for key sectors and/or regions.
