NREL and Partners Support Hawaii Clean Energy Initiative - Text Version

Below is the text version for the video NREL and Partners Support Hawaii Clean Energy Initiative.

Hawaii has utilized a number of different resources from the Department as well as the National Renewable Energy Laboratory. At the outset of HCEI, a lot of analysis was done. This was done in partnership between the state of Hawaii, the utility - the Hawaiian Electric Companies - as well as the National Renewable Energy Laboratory and DOE. That served as the foundation for HCEI.

As HCEI progressed, DOE helped facilitate conversations between the HECO companies and utilities within California that were all experiencing high penetrations of distributed PV on their systems to work together to understand challenges and identify potential solutions...that led to HECO working with the inverter industry, resulting in modifications to inverters that really allowed for them to raise the levels of distributed PV on the distribution system...then that ultimately led to a public-private project between HECO and Solar City and NREL's Energy Systems Integration Facility to further look at high penetration of distributed PV on the system. So, Hawaii has really leveraged analytical capabilities, technical capabilities - at both NREL and at DOE - to help support HCEI.
