2012–2017 San Francisco Travel Decision Surveys
Travel decision surveys were conducted in 2012–2017 in San Francisco and eight surrounding counties in California.
The surveys assessed and predicted daily mode shares for trips in San Francisco among city residents as well as residents of other Bay Area counties—Alameda, Contra Costa, San Mateo, Marin, Santa Clara, Napa, Sonoma, and Solano.
Data Collection Agency
Corey, Canapary, and Galanis conducted the surveys for the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency.
Survey Methodology
The surveys were carried out in English, Chinese (both Cantonese and Mandarin), and Spanish via telephone using random-digit dialing. Sampling was designed to include a mix of interviews with San Francisco residents as well as residents of other Bay Area counties. Mode share was determined by asking respondents for trip information, including the specific modes—e.g., car, walk, bicycle, rail, etc.—used for each trip.
Survey timeframes included October 2012–January 2013, April–May 2014, October–November 2014, August–October 2015, July—August 2016, and February–April 2017.
