2007 Chicago Regional Household Travel Inventory
To provide data for developing and refining travel demand forecast models, the 2007 Regional Household Travel Inventory studied the demographic and travel behavior characteristics of residents in the greater Chicago area. It included households in eight counties in Illinois and three in Indiana.
Data Collection Agency
The Chicago Metropolitan Agency for Planning (CMAP) conducted the study in coordination with the Illinois Department of Transportation, the Northwestern Indiana Regional Planning Commission, and the Indiana Department of Transportation.
Methodology
The study entailed the collection of travel and activity information for all household members (regardless of age) during a randomly assigned 24- or 48-hour period. It relied on the willingness of households to provide detailed information about its members and vehicles, and to record all travel and associated activity during the collection period. In addition to traditional survey-based data collection, this study featured a sub-sample of households collecting data via in-vehicle and wearable, global positioning system (GPS) devices.
Drive Cycle Processing and Filtering
NREL has developed a GPS data filtration routine to filter erroneous data points in individual drive cycles sourced from GPS devices mounted in vehicles. Second-by-second drive cycle data collected from GPS-instrumented vehicles during these surveys have passed through NREL's drive cycle processing and filtering routines.
Survey Records
Survey records include 460 households.

Transportation Data
The CMAP data set contains trip-level GPS data from 460 households. Of these, 160 completed the wearable GPS portion of the study and 300 completed the vehicle GPS portion of the study. Survey responses are not included. For details on available data and variable definitions, see the data dictionary.
NREL-generated drive cycle data are also available for this survey. For details on available data and variable definitions, see the drive cycle data dictionary.
