Phoenix Onboard Origin-Destination Transit Surveys
Conducted in 2007, 2010, and 2015, these Valley Metro Onboard Origin-Destination surveys collected demographic and travel behavior information about light-rail and bus riders in Phoenix, Arizona.
Transit Agency
The studies were conducted by NuStats (2007) and ETC Institute (2010 and 2015) for the Valley Metro Regional Public Transportation Authority.
Survey Methodology
The surveys were conducted in Chinese (both Cantonese and Mandarin), English, and Spanish.
2007
The 2007 survey was conducted Oct. 8—Dec. 18, 2007. A total of 97 Valley Metro routes were sampled on weekdays, covering all fixed-route bus services, including local, circulator, limited, rural, express, and RAPID. A sampling plan ensured statistical significance at the route level and an adequate sample size for analysis of weekday bus service.
2010
The 2010 survey was conducted October 2010—February 2011 to better understand the travel patterns of transit users, with a focus on the impact of light-rail. Nearly 100 bus routes and all light-rail stations were sampled.
2015
The 2015 survey was conducted during the spring to gather updated travel behavior data from users of all rail and bus fixed-route services in the Phoenix metropolitan planning area. The survey employed tablets with on-screen mapping features to enable real-time geocoding of addresses and places.
