The 2013 Onboard Transit Survey collected information about bus and light-rail ridership in the Santa Clara Valley area of California.

Survey objectives included:

  • Reporting trip characteristics, such as origin/destination, transit use, fare category, trip purpose, access/egress, and vehicle access
  • Providing a current user profile of transit riders, particularly as related to Title VI, including race/ethnicity, income, household size, home zip code, and English language proficiency
  • Assessing rider satisfaction of overall service.

Transit Agency

Corey, Canapary, and Galanis conducted the study for the Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority.

Survey Methodology

The survey was conducted Sept.18—Nov. 21, 2013, between the hours of 6 a.m. and 10 p.m. Surveyors distributed questionnaires to passengers on preselected routes. The sampling in the study was designed to achieve a cross-section of riders based on route, route type, time period, and geography.

The study garnered a 54% overall response rate, which was calculated by dividing the total number of completes (9,654) by all eligible passengers (17,905).
