U.S. Department of Energy Golden Field Office staff who work in the Research Support Facility (RSF) on NREL's South Table Mountain (STM) campus can use this page to find details about accessing campus, building features, and security.

Getting to and Around Campus

Access the STM campus 24/7, unless notified of a closure. NREL security monitors STM access from the Central Monitoring Station.

Entrances

Staff manage the East Site Entrance Building from 6 a.m.–5 p.m., Monday–Friday. Visitors, vendors, and construction vehicles must use this entrance.

Employees can more easily access the parking garage by using the South Entrance, available 24/7 for badged staff.

Traffic Safety

Laboratory Protection is authorized to take the following actions to ensure traffic safety on campus:

  • Record traffic and parking offenses and conduct safety interventions in response
  • Stop and detain individuals who appear to be under the influence of drugs and/or alcohol until local law enforcement arrives to assume control.

Traffic safety and parking offenses on NREL sites include, but are not limited to:

  • Careless or reckless driving/riding, including:
    • Speeding (as detected by Laboratory Protection using a properly calibrated speed gun or speed trailer); obey posted speed limits of 20 mph on roadways and 10 mph in the NREL Parking Garage
    • Failure to stop at a stop sign
    • Failure to yield right of way to emergency vehicles
    • Failure to yield right of way to a pedestrian in a posted crosswalk
    • Skating, skateboarding, or riding a scooter or bicycle in an unsafe manner or in unauthorized areas.
  • Not wearing a seat belt
  • Not wearing a Consumer Product Safety Commission- or Department of Transportation-approved helmet when riding a motorcycle, bicycle, scooter, skateboard, or similar transportation
  • Disobeying, arguing, or interfering with a Protective Force Officer (including offensive or threatening language or gestures) in the performance of official duties
  • Driving without a valid driver's license, registration, or insurance
  • Parking in an unauthorized area
  • Driving an overloaded or improperly loaded truck
  • Using personal electronic devices while driving/riding, in violation of NREL's Traffic Safety Program.

Report traffic safety concerns to Laboratory Protection at 303-384-6811 or in person at the STM East Entrance Building. Protective Force Officers will follow up as necessary.

Immediately report traffic incidents that may or do involve injury or property damage to security by calling ext. 1234 from an NREL phone or 303-384-6811.

Parking

Park in established parking spaces with your NREL-issued parking permit or placard. If you have an electric vehicle, find electric vehicle charging stations.

Do not park in the following:

  • Fire lanes
  • Loading/receiving docks (unless loading/unloading)
  • Accessible or limited-mobility spaces without a state or NREL-issued permit/placard
  • Designated visitor spaces without a visitor parking permit
  • Spaces designated for a specific use or person without a permit
  • Long-term parking and storage (unless connected with official U.S. Department of Energy or NREL travel or long-term detail with advance approval through line management and Laboratory Protection)

Shuttles

Several shuttles serve the STM campus, including the the STM Circulator, which stops at the RSF. See shuttle services for details.

Forgotten or Lost Badges

If you forget your NREL identification badge, report to the East or South Site Entrance Building for a 1-day temporary badge. If you lose your badge, immediately notify the Central Monitoring Station at 303-384-6811. Security personnel will deactivate the badge and arrange for a replacement.

Working in the Research Support Facility

The RSF is a high-performance, net-zero-energy building. The building's lights use occupancy sensors and automatically adjust for daylight while the RSF's system controls one-third of the windows to ensure energy conservation.

Contact RSF Facility Manager Jake Gedvilas, 303-275-3241, with any concerns about building operations.

Emergency Notifications

Sign up to receive emergency RAVE text alerts on your cellphone. In the event of an emergency at NREL, you will be directed to take one of the following actions:

When you hear an alarm or see emergency lights, leave buildings. If you're in the RSF's C Wing, go to the RSF Visitor Parking Lot until the all-clear is given.

When you hear a sheltering notification over the public address system, or receive an NREL sheltering text alert or email, go to the nearest building protective area, to the lower and inner portions of the building. If you can't get to a building protective area, get under desks/furniture and cover your head until the all-clear is given.

If you hear a lockdown notification over the public address system, or receive an NREL lockdown text alert or email, run and attempt to evacuate if there is an escape path. If you can't get out safely, find a place to hide. As a last resort, fight and defend yourself. Watch the Run, Hide, Fight video for more information.

During a lockdown, badge readers are disabled and doors are locked across the campus to prevent reentry into buildings.
