Tunisia Partnership

The USAID-NREL Partnership is collaborating with partners in the Tunisian energy sector to meet renewable energy and energy efficiency goals.

City lit up at dawn

The government of Tunisia set a goal to reduce greenhouse gas emissions 36% by 2030 (as compared to a business-as-usual case), integrate 8,350 MW of renewable energy capacity onto the electric grid, and reduce energy intensity by 2.8% per year over the same time frame.

NREL and Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory are collaborating with the Tunisian Company of Electricity and Gas, the National Agency for Energy Management, and USAID Power Tunisia to evaluate and plan for clean energy integration and energy efficiency measures that will support these national targets.

A technical working group was implemented to develop decision support models and data-driven analysis tools for distributed energy resource integration, planning, and management on the Tunisian grid. The working group is using two open-source modeling tools on GitHub, EVOLVE and Emerging technologies Management and Risk evaluation for distribution Grid Evolution (EMeRGE), to evaluate the technical impacts and interaction of distributed energy resource technologies on the Tunisian electric grid.

These technologies include rooftop solar PV, battery energy storage, and electric vehicles.

Priority areas for energy efficiency activities include cooling, green buildings, and financing. Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory developed cooling activities, including a market assessment and cost benefit analysis to assess benefits for consumers and the nation in revising the 2012 energy efficiency standards for air conditioners and to establish international best practices. For green buildings, a version of the tool BETTER was developed to analyze the energy performance of hotels in Tunisia and deliver precise benchmarking and retrofit assessment of hotel buildings. In financing, Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory is developing a revolving fund with National Agency for Energy Conservation to increase the reach of the actual energy transition fund of Tunisia to fund energy efficiency retrofits.
